Topanga –“a place above”– is the name given to the area by its first inhabitants, the Native American Tongva people. At the top of “a place above,” on the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking Topanga Canyon and the San Fernando Valley, is Top O’ Topanga, a beautiful 54 acre, 221-home community.
Top O’Topanga overlooks picturesque Topanga Canyon to the south and the Valley to the north, providing seclusion and access to amenities. The Pacific Ocean lies nine miles south, and Ventura Freeway three miles north (see Location).
Built in the 1960s, TOT has changed with the times while retaining its charm and beauty. Among its many features – swimming pool, spa, gym, game areas, library, picnic area, playground, and dog park – is our Clubhouse. This soaring 35-foot A-frame’s glass-walled north façade showcases dramatic views of the Valley. Designed and built in 1961 by E.V. Mikles, it is recognized as one of LA’s Historically Significant Gems by the Los Angeles Conservancy Modernism Committee. The clubhouse is a prime example of the A-frame, which gained popularity during the postwar era and lent itself to the informality associated with a leisure and recreation lifestyle. The building’s floor-to-ceiling glass affords a maximum view of the surrounding canyon and west San Fernando Valley.
